Black River Electric Cooperative

In 1999 Black River Electric contacted Sargent Construction Co. to look at the possibility of building a new complex on Hwy 67 North of Fredericktown. As we developed the site plans, building floor plans, and then a budget estimate, the Board of Directors from BREC signed the contract to build the new complex. Dan Tilk was put in charge of the design and construction manager on the project. The project was completed in early 2000 under budget and on schedule. But then on October 24, 2021 an EF4 (165 mph wind speed) destroyed most of the buildings and severely damaged the Dispatch building and main Office building. Black River Electric and numerous local contractors pulled together immediately to start the cleanup and temporary repairs.

Sargent Construction was chosen once again as the General Contractor by the BREC Board of Directors.  Dan Tilk, BREC department heads, and John Singleton met and began the process of designing the rebuild and working with the insurance company.   While plans and engineering were being developed the cleanup, demolition and concrete work was started.  The effects of COVID and material long lead times has created challenges but BREC staff and the construction TEAM continues to be creative and flexible to keep the project moving.

The office and dispatch building repairs are mostly completed. Currently, there are 5 buildings being rebuilt. The Warehouse, Storage Garage, Vehicle Garage, Shop and Open Storage building are all scheduled be delivered by Mid October 2022.  Target date for completion is July 2023.

Black River Electric is in full operation and maintained service to their customers throughout the disaster and as the disruption of rebuilding continues. As a members of BREC and the General Contractor, Sargent Construction is very proud of being given the opportunity to assist Black River Electric Cooperative and  REBUILD FOR THE FUTURE!
